The following is a list of Head Coaching Candidates for the Tier 2 &3 teams that will be offered at  U-14, U-12 and U-10  levels.  Pending player tryout evaluations, these coaches will not be assigned to a specific team.  There is a possibility, based on tryout evaluation, an additional coach may be named at a particular level.

COACHING BIOGRAPHY'S 

U-18
Joe McCarthy (HEAD COACH)

Joe McCarthy:
Coach McCarthy brings an extensive background in hockey. Joe grew up playing hockey in the Bangor area prior to the construction of the Alfond Arena. His first team experience was as a Mite playing for Orono Youth Hockey on an outdoor ice sheet behind the Asa C. Adams School.
He went on to play at Bangor High School and subsequently at the University of Vermont’s Division 1 Catamounts. A 1991 Toronto Maple Leafs second round supplemental draft pick, Joe played one year in the ECHL for the Raleigh Ice Caps.
USA Hockey Certified, Joe brings many years of experience working with youth hockey players from the Learn to Play/Atom level through Bantams.  He has worked side by side with the late Shawn Walsh, UMaine, and Terry Meager, Head Coach at Bowdoin College.  For the past nine years he has been actively involved with Bangor Youth Hockey and Maine Junior Black Bears.
Coach McCarthy lives in Bangor with his wife, Wendy, and their three children, Erin, Daniel, and Katie, all of whom skate for the Maine Junior Black Bears.

Bob Needham:
Coach Needham returns for his second season with our U-18 team bringing an outstanding knowledge of the game to the MJBB organization.
Bob was a member of the Kelowna Spartans BCJHL, winner of the Canadian Junior Championship.  The following years, Coach Needham helped the Colorado College Tigers win three WCHA league titles and advance to two NCAA Frozen Four tournaments serving as a captain his senior season. After graduating from CC he went on to play with the Baton Rouge Kingfish ECHL (ECHL Allstar), Utah Grizzlies IHL (LA Kings/NY Islanders) and Hershey Bears AHL (Colorado Avalanche affiliation).
Coach Needham is Level 4 USA hockey Certified and has an extensive coaching history with the Maine Jr. Black Bears. He has held several head & assistant coaching positions, along with thousands of hours of on ice instruction and skill development.
Bob lives in Veazie with his wife Denise, and four sons Zach, Dom, Matthew and Nick, all Maine Jr. Black Bears.

 

U-16 Tier 2
Brett Hale (HEAD COACH)

Brett Hale:
After an outstanding season at the U-16 last season, capturing the State Tier 3 Championship with a 6-0 victory over rivalry “The Maine Moose”. Coach Hale will turn his effort toward continuing the success of the MJBB program.
Coach Hale grew up in Orono and played travel hockey in the old PVHC. He played high school hockey for Orono High School graduating in 1990. At the age of 20 he made his coaching debut at the youth Bantam level. Since then, Brett has coached at many different levels from Mites to Bantams including a seven year stint as Head Coach at Old Town High School. He is a current level 3 USA hockey member. Brett resides in Winterport with his son Khaleb who is a current member of the Pewee Tier II team.

Chris Shawley:
Coach Shawley also return with a last season Midget State Tier 3 Championship. Alongside with Head Coach Brett Hale, Chris will continue his support towards getting back to another Championship game. 
Coach Shawley began his youth hockey coaching career in 2004 with Bangor Youth Hockey - Learn to play program and progressed up through every level and subsequently to the Maine Freeze and Maine Junior Black Bears. He has coached Atoms, Mites, Mighty Mites, House, TIII &TII Squirts, Tier III & Tier II Pee Wees, Tier III & Tier II Bantams and an upstart Tier IV competing Midget Team.
Coach Shawley lives in Hampden with his wife Jen and two hockey-playing sons Seth and Parker.


U-16 Tier 3

Guy Perron:
Coach Perron comes with 33 years of hockey experience. Throughout those years has worked with youth organizations, Junior and College D1 programs.  Before joining the MJBB as the Director of Hockey Operations, he spent 6 seasons as an Amateur Scout for the Colorado Avalanche (NHL) organization.
Coach Perron lives in Bangor with his wife, Renee, and their three children, Grace, Jack, and Marc-Andre. Jack and Marc-Andre both part of the Maine Junior Black Bears Family.

Mario Thyer:
The MJBB organization couldn’t be more excited to add another great coach to our team. Mario brings great knowledge and experience to the game. Former University of Maine player, he went on to sign after just two seasons at Maine with the Minnesota North Stars, now known as the Dallas Stars (NHL). After finishing his pro career, Mario returned and joined the University of Maine coaching staff for the 1996 and 1997 seasons. For over 20 years he also has given his time coaching youth teams in the Bangor area.
Mario lives in Bangor with his wife, Joanna, and their three children, Ben, Joey, and Maggie.

Scott Rochefort:

Scott comes to the Maine Junior Black Bears with over fifteen years of coaching experience at the youth and high school hockey levels. Scott was born and raised in Biddeford where he played youth and high school hockey. Voted one of the best goalies in the state during both his junior and senior seasons, Scott went on to Northeastern University as a walk-on to Men's Varsity hockey program. Scott left Northeastern to pursue his career in law enforcement but couldn't walk away from the game of hockey. Scott first started coaching as an Assistant Coach at Chevrus High School in 2002 and began coaching youth hockey in Biddeford when his daughter, Morgan was old enough to walk and skate. In 2010 Scott and his family moved to El Paso, Texas where Scott was the head coach of several mite, squirt and peewee travel teams. Scott became highly regarded for his gritty, hard-nosed coaching style while also making it fun for all of the kids. In 2014 Scott stepped away from coaching in order for Morgan to experience other coaching styles and to be a supportive father and fan. In 2016, Scott and his family returned to Maine and immediately joined the Maine Junior Black bears. After being a member of the organization and observing the amazing potential the players of this organization possess, Scott couldn't resist getting back into coaching.

Scott resides in Bangor his wife Meghan and his daughter Morgan.

 

 

U-12 Head Coaching Candidates

Jerry McKenney:
Jerry has recently lead our T2 PW to a State Runners Up and has previously coached a T3 SQ team to a Sate Runners Up title.  He has been coaching youth sports for over 20 years, he began coaching youth hockey 5 years ago with Brewer Youth Hockey. He has coached at the Mite Majors, Travel Squirt and PeeWee levels with the MJBB's for the past 3 years. He is USA Hockey Level 3 CEP.

Kevin Robbins:
Coach Robbins began his Hockey Coaching career in 2009 with the Learn to Skate program and has continued on through the years at many levels including Mites, Mighty Mites, Squirt Tier IV, Squirt Travel, Peewee Tier IV, Peewee Travel and Bantam Travel.  Coach Robbins has also worked with the Middle School Program.  Coach Robbins is Level 3 Certified through USA Hockey and lives in Glenburn with his wife Jennifer and two sons Connor and Caleb who both play for the Maine Junior Black Bears.

U-10 Head Coach

Bob Needham:
