Maine Junior Black Bears shall foster an appreciation for hockey among Greater Bangor children, along with lifelong skills and lessons that include:

• a sense of discipline
• a healthy competitive spirit
• cooperative team play
• an understanding of rules and boundaries
• an appreciation for safety
• and a love of the game of hockey!

The Maine Junior Black Bears has approximately 500 skaters enrolled. Programs serve all age groups and all skill levels, including Learn-to-Skate, Learn-to-Play, Atoms, 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U. 

Sawyer Arena is Bangor’s only hockey and skating facility. This arena generates an enormous amount of interest and pride in the entire Greater Bangor area. The MJBB are working in partnership with the City of Bangor Parks and Recreation Department to continue Sawyer Arena’s presence as the home for area hockey families.

With a seating capacity of 900, Sawyer Arena hosts several tournaments annually, including State Championships, and attracts teams from around Maine, New England and Canada. Youth, junior and adult hockey games and tournaments draw thousands of viewers and participants annually.

Sawyer Arena is also home to the high school hockey teams from Bangor High School, Hampden Academy and John Bapst Memorial High School. These teams play half of their regularly scheduled games here, as well as any playoff games... and attract loyal and passionate crowds.
