Coach Bios

The Maine Junior Black Bears would like to introduce you to the coaches we have for our program.  Our coaches are a very dedicated group and bring a wealth of experience to our program.  We are lucky to have these important volunteers.  We would like parents to know a little more about this season's coaches.

Jarrod Guimond

Jarrod Jarrod grew up in the Greater Bangor area playing his high school hockey at John Bapst. He played four years of varsity hockey at the University of Southern Maine and was Assistant Captain his senior year. He is USA CEP 3 and has been coaching youth hockey for the Maine Junior Black Bears for the last 3 years. He lives in Holden with his wife Erin and son Jackson who is also a Maine Junior Black Bear.

Bret Hale

Brett grew up in Orono and played travel hockey in the old PVHC. He played high school hockey for Orono High School graduating in 1990. At the age of 20 he made his coaching debut at the youth Bantam level. Since then, Brett has coached at many different levels from Mites to Bantams including a seven year stint as Head Coach at Old Town High School. He is a current level 3 USA hockey member. Brett resides in Winterport with his son Khaleb who is a current member of the Pewee Tier II team.

Jake Mathieu

Jake has been coaching for 15 years and is currently a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach. Jake played Youth, High school, Junior and College hockey and originally hails from Massachusetts. Jake is currently the Awards/Discipline Director and was previously the Director of Player Development for the MJBB board of directors.

Joe McCarthy

Joe brings an extensive background in hockey to the Squirt Tier III program. Joe grew up playing hockey in the Bangor area prior to the construction of the Alfond Arena. His first team experience was as a Mite playing for Orono Youth Hockey on an outdoor ice sheet behind the Asa C. Adams School.

Joe went on to play at Bangor High School and subsequently at the University of Vermont’s Division 1 Catamounts. A 1991 Toronto Maple Leafs second round supplemental draft pick, Joe played one year in the ECHL for the Raleigh Ice Caps.

USA Hockey Certified, Joe brings many years of experience working with youth hockey players from the Learn to Play/Atom level through Bantams.  He has worked side by side with the late Shawn Walsh, UMaine, and Terry Meager, Head Coach at Bowdoin College.  For the past eight years he has been actively involved with Bangor Youth Hockey and Maine Junior Black Bears.

Joe lives in Bangor with his wife, Wendy, and their three children, Erin, Daniel, and Katie, all of whom skate for the Maine Junior Black Bears.

David Miller

David has coached with the Maine Junior Black Bears since his son started skating in 2010, with 2014-2015 being his first year as a head coach (TIV Squirts Blue).  He played for Orono in the old PVHC of the late 1970s and 1980s, unwisely stopped playing the game when he got into high school, and after a quarter-century hiatus, restarted playing in 2010 when his five-year-old son first put on a pair of skates.  Now he is a USA CEP III certified coach and, when he is not coaching, he plays competitive games twice per week year-round with all the area’s old hockey duffers.

Lee Miller

Lee is certified as a level 5 hockey coach for USA hockey.   He played high school hockey for Hampden Academy.   He has coached many levels of hockey from mites to high school.   He was the coach for Old Town High School for two seasons. 

Bob Needham

Bob Needham takes the reins of  our  U-18 team with outstanding knowledge of the game. Winner of  the Canadian Junior Championship with the Kelowna Spartans and Colorado College Defenseman, he made two NCAA Final Four appearances.. After graduating from CC he went on to have a great career with he Baton Rouge Kingfish,Utah Grizzlies and Hershey Bears, (Colorado Avalanche affiliation).
Bob,  USA  hockey Certified, has an extensive coaching history with the Maine Jr. Black Bears, holding several head coaching positions and thousands of hours on ice instruction and skill development. He lives in Veazie with his wife Denise, and four sons Zach, Dom, Matthew and Nick all Maine Jr. Black Bears.

Guy Perron

Guy comes with 33 years of hockey experience. Through out those years has worked with youth organizations, Juniors and College D1 programs.  Before joining the MJBB this season as the  Director of Hockey Operations, he spent his last 6 seasons as an Amateur Scout for the Colorado Avalanche (NHL) organization.

Randy Rand

Randy brings a lot of experience to the Maine Junior Black Bears.. Randy grew up in the Old Town area playing high school hockey at Old Town High School.  He has been coaching with the Maine Junior Black Bears for 7 seasons, most recently coaching the past 3 seasons at the PeeWee level. Randy is a USA Hockey CEP level 3 certified coach.

Randy lives in Orono with his partner Meghan Kenney and children; Aidan, Owen, Lily and Tyler all who play for the Maine Junior Black Bears.

Chris Shawley

Chris began his youth hockey coaching career in 2004 with Bangor Youth Hockey - Learn to Play program and progressed up through every level and subsequently to the Maine Freeze and Maine Junior Black Bears. He has coached Atoms, Mites, Mighty Mites, House, TIII &TII Squirts, Tier III & Tier II Pee Wees, Tier III & Tier II Bantams and an upstart Tier IV competing Midget Team.

Chris's youth hockey coaching philosophy is to balance the Win/Loss record with an experience that is both fun and provides growth, ultimately pleasing to both player and parent. Chirs lives in Hampden with his wife Jen and two hockey-playing sons Seth and Parker.

Steve Van Dolman

Steve played High School Hockey for Acton Boxborough in Acton, Massachusetts and prep school hockey for Tilton School in Tilton, N.H.  Has been a Head Coach for  20 plus years at Bangor Youth Hockey, PVHC, MEAHA Festival Teams, Brewer High School, University of Maine Club, Maine Junior Black Bears.  Traveled to Washington D.C in 2012 to obtain my Level 5 USA Hockey Certification. 

Zachary Wilson

Zachary has been involved in hockey for the better part of his life. He played hockey for Kents Hill School and Brewer High School.  His love for the game has brought him all across the country as well as a trip to Europe. He was an assistant coach for Brewer High for 3 years and currently is USA CEP 1 certified and is the head coach for the Mini Mite White team.
